Toll rules by vehicle type

Austrian toll requirements differ significantly depending on your vehicle's weight class.

Passenger cars & vans < 3.5 t Vignette

All cars, camper vans, and light commercial vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes must display a valid vignette (toll sticker or digital vignette) when using Austrian motorways (Autobahnen) and expressways (Schnellstraßen).

The vignette can be purchased as a physical sticker (affixed to the windshield) or as a digital vignette linked to your licence plate. Digital vignettes are available on the official ASFINAG web shop and at partner retail locations throughout Austria and neighbouring countries.

  • Available as annual, 2-month, 10-day, or 1-day (digital only)
  • Physical stickers must be affixed to the inside of the windshield
  • Digital vignettes are valid 18 days after purchase (for consumer protection)
  • One vignette per vehicle — no transfer between vehicles

Heavy goods vehicles > 3.5 t GO-Box

Trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are subject to distance-based tolling via the GO-Box system. The vignette is not valid for these vehicles.

The GO-Box is an electronic on-board unit (OBU) that records distance driven on the toll road network. Tolls are calculated based on the number of axles, emission class (EURO category), and distance travelled.

  • GO-Box must be registered and mounted before entering motorways
  • Available at GO sales points (petrol stations near borders and within Austria)
  • Pre-payment or post-payment options via GO Direct for fleet operators
  • Toll rates per kilometre range from €0.2096 to €0.4687 depending on axle count & emission class

How to prepare for Austrian toll roads

Follow these steps before your trip to avoid fines and delays at the border.

Check your vehicle category

Determine whether your vehicle is under or over 3.5 tonnes. This decides whether you need a vignette or a GO-Box.

Choose the right vignette

For short trips, a 10-day or 1-day digital vignette is the most cost-effective. For extended stays, consider the 2-month or annual vignette.

Purchase before entering the motorway

Physical vignettes are available at petrol stations, border crossings, and tobacconists. Digital vignettes can be purchased online (note the 18-day activation delay for consumer protection).

Plan for special toll sections

If your route passes through the Brenner, Arlberg, Tauern, or other tunnel sections, budget for additional tolls. These are paid at toll stations along the route.

Keep your receipt

Always retain your vignette purchase receipt or digital confirmation. In case of a toll inspection, you may need to prove the validity of your vignette.

Vignette exemptions & toll-free roads

Not all Austrian roads require a vignette. Understanding the exceptions can save you money.

Toll-free road sections

Some motorway sections near the border are vignette-free to allow access to border facilities without a toll obligation:

  • A1 West motorway: Walserberg border crossing to Salzburg junction
  • A12 Inntal motorway: Kufstein border crossing to Kufstein-Süd exit
  • A14 Rheintal motorway: Hörbranz border crossing to Hohenems exit
  • A26 Linzer motorway: Entire section

These exemptions allow drivers to access nearby cities without purchasing a vignette, provided they exit at the designated toll-free exit.

Vehicle exemptions

Certain vehicles are exempt from the vignette requirement:

  • Emergency vehicles (ambulances, fire engines)
  • Vehicles of the Austrian Federal Army during exercises
  • Vehicles with special diplomatic plates
  • Vehicles used for road maintenance by ASFINAG

Disabled persons with a valid parking permit are not automatically exempt — the vignette is still required unless specific conditions apply.

About Road Toll Info Austria

Road Toll Info Austria is an independent informational resource dedicated to helping drivers understand the Austrian motorway toll system. We are not an official toll operator and are not affiliated with ASFINAG or the Austrian government.

Our editorial team researches and verifies toll-related information from publicly available official sources, including ASFINAG publications, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, and EU transport directives.

We started this project in 2024 after receiving countless questions from international drivers confused by Austria's multi-layered toll system. Our goal is to provide clear, accurate, and up-to-date guidance in English.

Our mission: to make Austrian toll information accessible and understandable for every driver — whether you're a tourist, a transit truck operator, or an expat living in Austria.

Why is this free? We believe essential travel information should be freely accessible. Road Toll Info Austria is a community-driven project. We may earn a small commission if you use one of our partner links in the future, but we do not sell vignettes, GO-Boxes, or any toll products directly. All editorial content is independent and unbiased.
